ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on issues related to the intrusion of digital technologies into the private sphere, particularly as it relates to digital listening devices that can record people’s conversations and track their movements and actions. It addresses privacy risks associated with the online disclosure of personal information and security concerns related to online banking. Search engines track individuals’ browsing activity so that they can target specific ads to them, and online retailers follow people’s purchasing patterns and hope to sell them more products by recommending other related goods and services. Smart devices often provide location services that track users’ current location and final destination, including their mode of transportation. Many interviewees distinguished expectations of privacy in the public realm from their assumptions of privacy in their personal lives. A variety of interviewees expressed their concerns regarding the safety of their online information, specifically as it related to online banking.
