ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises seven core areas for future maternal and spirituality research: maternal anxiety/depression; the impact of transpersonal birth experiences into the transition; the incorporation of spiritual intelligence capacities in maternal education; the relationship between spirituality and the new virtual maternal connections; neurobiological implications of maternal consciousness; the impact of spirituality on maternal ambivalence; and the relationship of spiritual embodiment in adoptive, fostering and surrogate mothers.

This chapter also outlines professionals in maternal health and education who can benefit from the study of spirituality in the transition to motherhood: lecturers, midwives, students, lactation consultants, nurses, chaplains, doctors, researchers, maternal scholars, counsellors, psychotherapists, psychiatrists and psychologists.

The last sections identify some strengths and limitations on the present study and how it has contributed to an opening in the understanding of the psychospiritual paradigm in the maternal transition.
