ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, the findings of a pilot study are reported. The pilot study was conducted by interviewing four first-time mothers about their experiences in the transition to motherhood: the prenatal, birth and postnatal periods. The concept of liminality is at the core of any transition and it is explained in the first section.

In the second section, three themes that emerged out of the interview data are discussed: ‘crisis’, ‘embodiment’ and ‘transformation’. Those three themes are written in three sub-sections and analysed along with the psychospiritual literature.
