ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the translation of Urbanus magnus. It focuses on measure, balance, stoicism, perseverance, and rationality. There are six things in the world that all creatures hate beyond measure:eyes arrogantly raised, tongues that do not speak the truth, cruel fingers stained with the blood of the just, hearts overflowing with all sins, steps that rush toward mischief, and sworn witnesses sowing all kinds of deceitful falsehood. Sleepiness should not steal upon a lord's domestic servants when they are supposed to remain awake, nor should it boorishly bluster at them. Loyalty is rare among the most powerful because none of them knows what intimacy is, what love is, or what a true friend is. Spring, autumn, winter, and summer govern the year. Rest is beneficial, and drinking is good in moderation. Engage in exercise and Venus' enjoyments more than in summer. Medicines and baths are useful. Winter is wet and cold. Cultivate playful speech and avoid arguments.
