ABSTRACT

Pastoral care needs to be Developmental in its approach, and Skills Building in its techniques. Schools must state clearly what they expect from their pastoral system if the tutors involved are to be effective in their task, and are to be seen to be so by the pupils. The type of organisation has the potential to offer a great deal to pupils and staff provided certain prerequisites are attended to. Helping pupils cope with differential teacher style and expectation should form part of a pastoral curriculum, so that pupils may learn more quickly and efficiently how to cope with previously confusing and frustrating situations. A good pastoral system which wants to create a positive ethos, acts as a Mediating Influence between staff and pupils to establish high levels of morale on both sides. In teachers way the pastoral system can evolve to meet the changing needs of pupils in terms that pupils will see as relevant.
