ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses specifically on two-year-olds, celebrating and understanding the joys and challenges; understanding and recognising two-year-old children have unique needs. It aspires to support a reflective approach to knowledge development, encouraging a reflective approach to current understanding and assumptions around the needs of two-year-old children. The book introduces the concept of reflection and what it means to reflect on practice. It also introduces the foundations for learning – development theory, a more in depth look at: personal social and emotional development; physical development; and communication and language development. The book considers the influencing and powerful role family culture and home learning exerts on young children’s development. It identifies the importance of valuing the process of learning, how to develop positive dispositions and mindset through fostering the skills of resilience and perseverance.
