ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an example of intervention and training with girls with Rett Syndrome (RTT). In Italy, people with multiple disabilities, such as children with RTT, may go to state schools and can be educated alongside their non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible. For children with RTT that need help, classroom teachers make changes in the classroom to meet the students’ needs, such as modifications in the youngster’s curriculum, the manner in which subjects are taught, homework assignments, and overall expectations. Educational professionals and parents must understand the importance of rules and routines for individuals with RTT and apply them in various settings and situations. Application of rules and routines in school and home helps children with RTT engage more successfully in activities and prevents problem behavior. Behavioral training based on the operant conditioning principles, as well as intervention in the communication, have been implemented with RTT patients.
