ABSTRACT

The way in which the introduction of psychoanalysis was accomplished in Brazil can be traced back to the different physical and cultural traits of the peoples who contributed to the formation of the modern Brazilian society. The history of psychoanalysis in Brazil is described in the chapter is beginning with the first associations created in the States of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Rio Grande do Sul. The first training analysis in Latin America took place in Sao Paulo, in October 1937, after Adelheid Lucy Koch was authorized by Ernest Jones, then President of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), during the Marienbad Congress of 1936, to work as training analyst in Brazil. In 1967, the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Association-since 2008 called Federacao Brasileira de Psicanalise -was founded with the aim of gathering societies and Study Groups in Brazil accredited by the IPA, providing a forum, domestically and internationally, for scientific exchange and discussion of psychoanalytic topics.
