ABSTRACT

For 25 years the French photographer Frédéric Brenner roamed the world in search of Jews to photograph. That yielded a beautiful coffee table book (2003a) with an accompanying book of texts with free associations that sometimes contain an explanation (2003b). The whole is held together in a sturdy slipcase. The guiding principle of the book is that the destiny of those who were photographed was to a large extent determined by the fact that they were Jews or were seen as Jews. It is also an attempt to be ahead of the archaeologists. All sorts of clubs and individuals are depicted, and you can practically see the photographer think: record this before it is too late.
