ABSTRACT

As you will see, in 1993 I utilised a nineteenth-century French novel (Against Nature) set against Atwood’s late twentieth-century “environmental” novel (Surfacing) to make salient points about a change of tone (at the very least) I felt was needed in environmental discourse. I stand by what I wrote and feel that those of us concerned with climate change and sustainability face many of the same problems—and, in a way, we remain the main problem.
