ABSTRACT

In reflecting on experiences of the Belgirate II conference, this chapter perceives there to have been multiple boundaries at Belgirate II: boundaries that are tangible, such as the process of entering into the geographic territory of another country, as well as intangible boundaries related to identity, citizenship, allegiance and loyalty on personal and professional levels. One of the boundaries to be crossed prior to the conference was that of being accepted into the event. There was a relatively clear but permeable boundary where members left and returned with information to share and where visitors were enfolded into the group, engaged with, and let go, but in a way that did not disrupt the core of the discussion. One of the themes that immediately became apparent to during the opening plenary was that of the boundaries between a conference that focuses on presentations to facilitate group learning and a group relations conference.
