ABSTRACT
In our clinical work, we were led to the conclusion that manifest disruptions in behavior and functioning during adolescence are preceded by a developmental breakdown at puberty. The consequence of such a disruption is that the developmental function of adolescence—establishing a final sexual identity—is seriously affected. In this chapter we concentrate on aspects of this function which are important to an understanding of developmental breakdown and its relation to later pathology.
