ABSTRACT

The question of normality and pathology in adolescence has always been controversial and remains so. The issue is not discussed in detail in this chapter, which is not intended as a substitute for a treatise on psychopathology. We confine ourselves to laying down some markers to facilitate the understanding of normal and abnormal developments and to putting forward some essential criteria for appraisal of the main characteristics of psychic functioning. The initial taking of bearings discussed here, which falls short of a detailed assessment calling for specific training, is necessary if not sufficient, because it already has far-reaching implications for the adolescent's future.
