ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the history of the professional caregivers courses; background of those attending the courses and how they have been recruited; and how the courses are structured. Psychotherapists advertised the courses to professionals working in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, counselling, the prison service, and pastoral care. They described the course as offering professional caregivers the opportunity to explore the dynamics of attachment in their own lives. People’s expectations of the course generally spanned an interest in developing their work with clients around attachment issues and also having space for themselves to explore their own patterns of attachment. Psychotherapists have explored a number of time structures. Members who retake the course find the quality of their exploration is much more personally satisfying. The chapter describes some information on the way the groups are structured, how psychotherapists have recruited the membership, and the professional background of those attending.
