ABSTRACT

The sexual system is the most difficult of all the seven systems to conceptualize clearly. Dorothy Heard and Brian Lake felt that complications in understanding sexuality and the sexual system are associated with observations that show a relationship between the arousal of sexual feelings, the arousal of vitality, and the making of friendships. An adult can declare that he or she loves his or her: sexual partner, parents, siblings, children, extended family, and also home and its terrain, and sometimes work and/or hobbies. Adolescents develop the capacity to be sexually active years before they are able to take on the responsibilities of parenthood and have the ability to regulate their own emotional arousal. The three functions of the system are: affectional sexuality that has an interpersonal goal; the defensive form of sexuality that has an intrapersonal goal; and the third function, which is the reproductive function of sexuality.
