ABSTRACT

I have been involved for years in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with sub-Saharan Africans who have had experiences involving imprisonment, torture, and physical and sexual violence. At a time of absolute danger, they found themselves in the situation of having to choose between two alternatives: either give themselves up to a cruel and anonymous death, or escape, who cares to where. A strange quirk of fate made escape, and thus their arrival in Italy, possible.
