ABSTRACT

Older people often differ from others in terms of gender, ethnicity, culture, spirituality, sexuality, class, or ability. This chapter explores to help the older people to move from a position of what is called as "diminished identity", where they are able to access or show only a limited range, or less valued versions, of themselves to an "enhanced" identity, where they speak and live a range of preferred versions of self. Therapeutic dilemmas are involved in this challenge particularly in contexts of difference and discrimination. Younger practitioners are addressed to bridge the differences between adults and the older people to understand each other and develop a trusting working relationship. The chapter also inspires to approach difference not as a problem or obstacle, but as a chance to explore and appreciate the diversity that the clients bring, facilitate them in becoming experts in their own lives, and, ideally, begin to bridge the gap between them.
