ABSTRACT

A great deal of research has been carried out into the various areas of premature children's development. The research team consider that their results indicate that specific difficulties with regard to learning and difficulties with attention/ concentration are linked to a low Intelligence Quotient (IQ) score in children with low birth weight. Even though the problems only become apparent at school, they have, according to the researchers, no influence on school abilities This could be because they could be the result of the same neurological disturbances that are the cause of the children's low IQ score. The researchers point out that it is a weakness in the investigation that specific learning difficulties and attention disturbances in children of school age were not evaluated directly. In order to avoid learning difficulties and to help the children better to master social interaction with other children, it is important to monitor and support those prematurely born children who have a need of this.
