ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author looks at how the she first became fascinated by charged moments in therapeutic relationships and how they led her to train and practise as an integrative arts psychotherapist. She presents a number of examples of the sorts of moments she is referring to, from the perspective of both client and therapist. The author explains how she came to understand and classify them as breakthrough moments and how she ultimately chose the research methodology. A breakthrough moment always arrives suddenly. She fascinated by dramatic and pivotal breakthrough moments, but she should point out that there are other important occasions and experiences in a therapy session that can be significant in a less dramatic way. Her burning desire to find out more about breakthrough moments as well as to understand the powerful role that images seem to play became all-consuming.
