ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author focuses on the therapist's corner of the triangular relationship and considers specifically what it is that she bring to the therapy that might increase the possibility for her clients to achieve breakthrough moments and change. As a therapist the author always intrigued to meet a new client and excited to see if she can help them reduce whatever suffering they might be experiencing. There are a vast number of different traits and characteristics a therapist might possess that can impact upon their client and the therapeutic relationship. Researchers and theorists have suggested a number of important qualities that are necessary to be an effective therapist. According to Daniel Siegel, the mindful therapist possesses qualities such as being creative and open to possibility. A therapist's self-disclosure might be in response to their client's story, but in arts-based therapy it can be in response to a client's art-image, as in the case of the author’s client Henry.
