ABSTRACT

Breathing reflects the state of the body, but also our inner mood and our current situation in life. Breathing puts us in touch with some aspects of our heritage and interactional history. Psychophysical breathing therapy can help to alleviate mental and physical problems caused by imbalanced breathing. The ideas of psychiatrist and psychotherapy trainer Matti Keinanen have contributed to strengthening the theoretical basis of psychophysical breathing therapy. Mental mobility consisting of the physiological state, undifferentiated emotional experiences, non-verbal and verbal experiencing, and perceptual ability are called mental breathing. The mutual breathing between these levels creates the ability to soothe and express oneself both with and without words. In physical breathing, breath flows in and out. Similarly, in the mind a metaphoric "inhalation and exhalation" occurs between the self and others. Mental images are among the most significant means of accomplishing change in psychophysical breathing therapy.
