ABSTRACT

It is a common mistake to think that the well-developed introvert is less adapted socially because he is less gregarious. In some ways, he is better adapted: for example, he is usually more reliable than the extrovert. It is just that the introvert reaches inside himself for his gifts to the other, while the extrovert responds, givingly, to the stimulus of the other. Freud was more introverted in that he studied what went on inside people, while Adler was more extroverted in that he concentrated on the relationships between people. Freud was an introvert who dug up his unconscious inferior extraversion in the form of his Oedipus complex. Jung claimed that any actual case of neurosis revealed both Freud's and Adler's observations, large as life. Too-long-continued entanglement in the emotional politics of the family of origin (Freud) and lack of courage compensated for by power and superiority (Adler) are two sides of the same coin.
