ABSTRACT

Bearing in mind both the intensive intervention and the neuro-biological differences present in infants with pre-autistic behaviours, the author have found the following three-step method to be the most effective when working with children in the nursery and home environment. The final stage is the therapeutic approach. By building on the associations and the behavioural foundations provided in the first two steps, logical reasoning is used to teach the child how to understand, accept, and deal with their own emotions in the nursery setting. This eventually leads to an ability to relate to others, through interaction, communication, and affection. The support worker "scaffolds" the child physically in order to structure movements, encourage actions, and aid task completion, while describing what is happening and what they are doing. Scaffolding while explaining sends a clear message that the child can do the task, and is able to start and finish it.
