ABSTRACT

The intervention involved weekly meetings with the infant and parents, lasting between one and a half to two hours, for a period of up to three years. During the sessions, the ability to enter the world of the child with poor communication skills was key to developing an understanding of their lack of motivation to engage in meaningful relationships with others. In this chapter, tha authors chapter introduces the idea that we only work with the child if the whole family is involved, that is, parents, siblings, and the child with autism spectrum disorder. They shows that after the intensive programme we want to include any other adults involved in the child's day-to-day life, such as grandparents, nannies, and key staff from the child's nursery. The intensive programme involves a strong commitment from the family, not only in terms of time, but also in terms of trust, emotional involvement, and hard work.
