ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the work with adolescents. Work with adolescents extends naturally into work with young adults, and in many cases the style of work is nearer to that undertaken with adults than to the work with younger children. Adolescence is a period of rapid change, outwardly marked by the transition from school to more unstructured educational institutions or to work, from living at home to living outside the close family circle, and perhaps even embarking on marriage and founding one's own home. It is a time of important decision-making in relation to studies, to career and sexual relationships, a time in which the young person's hopes and fears about becoming an adult are put to the test of reality. Youngsters may be afraid, too, of being fobbed off with reassurance, or given drugs rather than understanding.
