ABSTRACT

The concept of a refugee was expanded by the Convention's 1967 Protocol and by regional conventions in Africa and Latin America to include persons who had fled war or other violence in their home country. The lead international agency coordinating refugee protection is the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which counted 8,400,000 refugees worldwide at the beginning of 2006. By and large the majority of refugees who leave their country seek asylum in the neighbouring countries. Asylum seekers have to recount details of past persecution to the immigration of nationality directorate in the host countries' Home Office. All asylum-seekers in the UK are seeking refugee status and the UK abides by the UN definition of a refugee when determining refugee status. In relation to children of refugees and unaccompanied minors, child welfare and juvenile justice systems should be required to follow all actions concerning the protection of children.
