ABSTRACT

Reparation is a form of restoration can go on at a conscious level through play and through other processes, only within the unconscious can the internal objects become repaired. Only in this way can the phantasy be altered. When reparation is achieved, psychosexual growth and development continue, the Oedipal revengeful and destructive phantasies are worked through, and a successful resolution is achieved. The climate for successful reparation is created by the other's response of pleasure, which helps the unconscious phantasies become less threatening; perhaps a sadistic superego, an angry conscience, becomes less restrictive or harsh, allowing the ego functions, the doing part of the child, to emerge and be fulfilled. As the child is able to see that his or her reparations are successful, a belief in his or her own goodness grows. The parents were pleased by their children's work, and the children saw and felt this, which helped them to overcome some of their anxieties.
