ABSTRACT

Supervisor and supervisee agree to a clear delineation of expectations concerning a particular time frame, fee schedule, policy on payment for missed sessions, and make a secure commitment to the process of supervision. Transference is understood as the patient's experience and perception of the analyst as a person who has attributes that evoke feelings similar to those associated with a figure from early childhood. Countertransference can be understood as the analyst's thoughts and feelings that occur in response to receiving these feelings in various situations that are replayed in the analytic setting. The whole patient-analyst relationship includes both normal and pathological features, conscious and unconscious elements, transference and countertransference, in varying proportions. In art therapy and supervision of art therapists, transference and countertransference are of paramount importance, as they are in psychotherapy and supervision of psychotherapy conducted in the verbal dimension.
