ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a new way of working with the method of Organizational Role Analysis (ORA). Whereas traditionally ORA has involved work between an individual client and a consultant, this chapter documents work between a consultant and two role holders within the same organization. The project within which the role analyses took place was a collaborative action research project between researchers from a university and a correctional services organization. The general aim of the research was to develop ways of exploring the implementation of case management into correctional services, predominantly through using correctional officers (unit staff) as case managers. The research task was achieved collaboratively through a series of stages. First, to discover and analyse the existing practice and understanding of case management throughout the correctional service; then, second, working with staff to develop a rigorous operating case management model that was flexible enough to suit various locations and offender categories.
