ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how coaching and mentoring can support educational leaders and their organisations to flourish. It also considers further applications for coaching which can enhance leadership effectiveness, support succession planning, and reconnect to moral purpose. Educational leadership is uniquely challenging and can be particularly rewarding. It combines leadership of people, learning, and complex organisations. Leadership is a concept that has fascinated us as a human race throughout our history. Leadership coaching has been shown to have real potential in the private and public sectors by "improving leadership in those with high potential, facilitating transitions to larger jobs, on-boarding those new to the organization, and developing a selected group of individuals with specific needs". In the educational arena, coaching and mentoring are already being used to support new and aspiring head teachers and college principals. An educational professional does not exist in a vacuum, and it is useful to regularly refer to the educational context during the coaching conversation.
