ABSTRACT

The notion of culture has been widely explored in many subjects including anthropology, sociology, psychology, economics and history. While some have approached the notion as generalists, conceiving of all aspects of organised life as culture, others have attempted to define culture more narrowly, separating it from other phenomena of social life such as climate or strategy. "Culture is something that an organization is: it emerges from social interactions, as the product of negotiated and shared symbols and meanings". This view of culture conceives of people as distinctly social animals who work together in an organised way in order to survive and thrive. Culture is the intrinsic social fabric through which organisation occurs, consciously and unconsciously, intentionally and unintentionally. The emergence of culture may be seen through the lens of group psychology. Organisational culture is a relatively new notion with little reference in the literature until the 1980s when it blossomed and is a basic concept in organisational theory.
