ABSTRACT

Asperger's syndrome is a social and communication disorder which hinders people in understanding others, communicating effectively, and thinking flexibly, so they have difficult lives, isolated in an intensely social world. Asperger's syndrome (and autism in general) is a complex developmental disorder: initial differences in the structure and function of the brain give rise to difficulties in perception and cognition which affect the development of the child, creating additional difficulties. We know that Asperger's is a branch of autism, and as such it is defined by the Triad of Impairments: difficulties in social relationships and communication, and a rigidity of thinking patterns. Behaviour arises from belief. Sometimes this is conscious: people choose what they will and will not do. People with Asperger's who become violent and break things when they are frustrated probably know that this not good behaviour, probably wish they didn't, but do it anyway, and at some level they let themselves off the normal rules.
