ABSTRACT

Asperger's is a condition that probably arises in the genes; it expresses itself though the personality in various forms of behaviour that give the diagnostician a chink through which she or he can see the condition at work. There are some patterns which have been established by now and which are very helpful in understanding how this condition arises and how it exerts its influence. There is a variety of evidence that brain architecture differs slightly in Asperger's when compared to NTs. There is also a link between Asperger's and clumsy child syndrome, so another disrupted system may be the proprioceptive system which allows us to know where the bits of our body are in relation to each other. Dignosis is difficult. Many features of the person interact to produce the behaviour which has to be recognised and matched to the DSM IV by a qualified, experienced and open-minded diagnostician.
