ABSTRACT

An important theme of the 1989 Exchange Training Program was the relationship between the content and the process in an interview. The focus was on how therapists utilize that relationship in their work with families. As we have thought about the discussions that took place during the Exchange Program, we have formulated several ideas related to content and process as a recursive (circular) phenomenon. A therapeutic experience incorporates belief systems which constitute the contents of both the family and therapists. The ways in which they go about altering their beliefs is the process of their interactions. The family and therapists attend to what they believe to be the others' intentions, and both formulate interpretations of what they think the others' intentions are in the conversation.
