ABSTRACT

In and on the terrain of cross-cultural encounters, the co-creative approach appears to be really promising. The main challenge when a patient and a practitioner from different cultural environments meet each other is to define a common, co-constructed and co-constructive territory by negotiating some kind of frame of reference that, at the beginning, is acceptable to both, and later, hopefully comfortable for both. The Adult ego state is thus a process, not a static entity. It is characterised by a "pulsating personality, processing and integrating feelings, attitudes, thoughts and behaviours appropriate to the here-and-now—at all ages from conception to death". One of the key ideas of co-creative transactional analysis is the principle of present-centred development and working in and with the present. To co-create a common relational field, it is necessary to honour the cultural worldview of clients, their understanding of their problems, their causes, and their explanation for their situation.
