ABSTRACT

The Interpersonal Dynamics (ID) consultation is particularly useful for facilitating a focused and structured clinical discussion where the purpose is to elucidate dysfunctional patterns of relationship that can impede progress and threaten to derail treatment plans and therapeutic engagement. The focus of the consultation is to bring to light interactions that cause great difficulty for the treatment team but are often difficult to pinpoint or to bring together in a coherent whole, given that a persistent feature of our client group is a tendency to fragment both internally and in their relationships. For any index offence one could expect some of the characteristics to be present in the interpersonal dynamics between the service user and staff team. However, for those involving a sexual perversion, elements of distortion, misrepresentation of reality, sadistic control, denial, and deception may become significant issues in the dynamics involved. The chapter presents the case study of an ID consultation that was conducted at an international conference.
