ABSTRACT

The symptoms of stress and anxiety can be very powerful in their own right, for people with and without Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME). Adrenaline and noradrenaline produce all of the symptoms of stress. Studies suggest that if people challenge their positive and negative beliefs about worry, then they might worry less, and consequently experience less stress and anxiety. Worry is a strategy for thinking. In episodes of acute anxiety, these bodily sensations due to the fight or flight response can be misinterpreted as being dangerous. Patient might find it useful to distinguish between stress and anxiety by looking at the intensity of patient’s symptoms. Strange anxiety symptoms can seem to reinforce the thought that something bad is going to happen to patients. Many people with CFS/ME have noticed that when they become stressed, their symptoms become worse.
