ABSTRACT

The fostering of artistic "reverie" alternates with scientific reflection and evaluation of the material; and this dual mode of learning is then transmitted into an analogous mode of teaching. The first step in an initial course is to learn, through doing, the radical art of listening. Writing is an instrument of learning: a facilitative process of articulating thoughts, setting down an account, whether of an episode or session in a therapeutic interaction, or of a developing thread of reflection on an event or an idea. In a collaborative interaction with marks on a page, one sees one's thinking. The process of evaluation in the field of psychotherapy training should be analogous to a masterclass in music. Not that the one who evaluates is a master of the art, but that the skills of observation and feedback should be highly tuned in the service of a dialogue of playing and critique/instruction/commendation.
