ABSTRACT

You were talking about Buber and Macmurray—the idea of the poet and metaphysicist—and about our different styles. In some ways I think our collaboration has been one of the best things about the book. I still marvel at our rapport, while finding it disheartening that it seems to be such a rare thing. I am not a saint: I can be very bossy, controlling, competitive; I’m not very trusting of the Other. Of course, I’m exaggerating a little, but those elements are there, so … I’m proud of myself; I’m proud of us, and excited and heartened by what we’ve achieved. I grappled with so many of my undermining, isolating tendencies. It was very uncomfortable at times, but ultimately so satisfying. It has truly been a profound learning.
