ABSTRACT

There are individuals who evacuate seemingly unbearable states of mind into other people or into another person and then attack that person. Many murderers find their victims by means of a complex process. This applies particularly to premeditated murders. But as many workers have observed, murder occurs in external reality when it has occurred before, often many times, in phantasy. The victim may be the person encountered who most reminds the murderer of the person he has killed before in his mind. This does not apply to persons who challenge or goad the killer so that the choice depends, in these instances, on behavior rather than appearance. True repentance publicizes remorse, acknowledges the need for mourning, and sets the mourner free. Reality testing should take place in the phantasy world in the mind before being committed to action.
