ABSTRACT

Aggression consists of the use of force to express feelings and to achieve aims. It is used to intimidate, to impress, to manipulate, and sometimes to subjugate other people and the environment and the various things contained in it. Aggression is used for purposes of self-preservation and in the service of species preservation, It is used at times to save, rescue, and defend. Sometimes aggression is unconsciously designed to put madness into somebody else, that is, to drive him or her mad in the hope and expectation that the subject may remain sane. Several kinds of mitigation may take place. One is the expression of violence against things instead of people. The man who smashes the telephone or breaks a glass rather than beating up his young child with whom he is annoyed has made a considerable step forward. The restoration of equilibrium may be hastened by appropriate action on the part of the social agencies.
