ABSTRACT

The infinite need to "enjoy" stems, therefore, directly from quantity, which leads to the thought that a biological component is then at work at the depths of being. The surge of quantity, which is reproduced continually, brings about in the psychic organisation a sort of trench, a rut, which the psychic apparatus, as soon as it is confronted with a fairly strong excitation, can no longer avoid. Only the quantity of excitation involved counts. During an act, when the signifying function is eclipsed by the evacuation of quantity, one can hardly conceive that a desire, an element of defensive conflict, has been at work. If one still wants to speak in terms of desire, even desire when it is freed from repression, one would see, after all is said and done, that desire is completely devoted to the handling of quantity.
