ABSTRACT

Attentional control can be seen as a self regulatory process that underpins both mental and emotional functioning and years has been identified by researchers in child development as a feature of effortful control "the efficiency of executive attention, including the ability to inhibit a dominant response and/or to activate a subdominant response, to plan, and to detect errors". The ability to maintain attentional control pervades all aspects of mental toughness. Mentally tough individuals are more likely to identify and adhere to important goals, be able to focus and see the opportunity of doing so when under pressure, manage or eliminate distractions and regulate their own behavior. Most classrooms and offices have bins and paper and an easy way to practice attentional control is to roll up pieces of paper into compact balls and practice throwing them into a bin.
