ABSTRACT

Referral, assessment, treatment and outcome evaluation make up the core stages of any horticultural therapy (HT) programme and are inextricably linked. Any HT programme—whatever its type—that is client-centred will typically involve the stages of referral, initial assessment, treatment planning, evaluation, review, and discharge. The therapeutic treatment planning stage will further include identification of aims, goal-setting, activity or task selection, and outcome specification. This chapter examines several stages in the referral, assessment and treatment process to perform a specific function. Secondary NHS referral services These include specialist departments such as psychiatry, psychological treatments such as Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services, physiotherapy, local community mental health services, drug and alcohol, trauma, and rehab units. Whilst veterans may be referred to these services, clearly they are not the only users; how to sift out and focus on providing veterans with relevant information without wasting resources will be a challenge.
