ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how to structure the horticultural and other activities which form the basic tools of therapeutic work. It explains how to plan and programme horticultural and other activities on a monthly as well as a twelve-month basis. The chapter shows how these activities link back to the goals and outcomes of individual veterans. In this way, veterans can gradually construct a portfolio of plant knowledge and horticultural skills as concrete evidence of their achievements, which may be very useful, not simply to impart pride and boost self-confidence, but also to take along in future to interviews with colleges or potential employers. Half of all horticultural therapy work comes under the heading of "plant right, eat right" and focuses on the growing, harvesting, cooking, eating, preparing, and preserving of vegetables, fruit, and herbs from the garden.
