ABSTRACT

The dreams of the "analysed" no less than the "un-analysed" are psychical attempts to deal with inner and outer stimuli leading to excitation of anxiety. "Analysed" persons who dreamt prolifically before analysis subsequently find their dreams greatly reduced in number. The laws of dream formation produce a manifest dream content that successfully disguises the true sources of the conflict producing it. The analysis of dreams involves a disintegration of the manifest content in order to reach the emotions and memories that the ego has repudiated. The condensations are elaborated, affect is set free by discovery of the element from which it has been displaced, symbolism is uncovered, repressed memories and phantasies are brought to light. The breaking up of dreams in the process of psycho-analytic technique is one of the processes that enables the inner psychological forces to bring about a new synthesis.
