ABSTRACT

Certain contradictions and confusions must be considered even though present knowledge may be inadequate for their resolution. Melanie Klein's discoveries of the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions required a theory that in certain situations apparently unrelated elements, associated with feelings of persecution, come together as an integrated whole associated with feelings of depression. The axioms of logic have their roots in the experience of a reason that fails in its primary function to satisfy the passions just as the existence of a powerful reason may reflect a capacity in that function to resist the assaults of its frustrated and outraged masters. These matters will have to be considered in so far as dominance of the reality principle stimulates the development of thought and thinking, reason, and awareness of psychic and environmental reality. The author reviews the genetic axis in the light of the aspect of projective identification.
