ABSTRACT

The core of psychoanalytic method is the use of the transference, a phenomenon whereby the patient expects the analyst to behave in preset ways. The spiritual struggle takes place in psychoanalysis within the relationship. Psychoanalysis recognizes that this is the locus for transforming action. A psychoanalyst is always up against resistance to the process, and, as the analysis proceeds, the resistance frequently becomes stronger. Traditional religion, despite all its attempts, has failed to cross the bridge from the fuga mundi spirituality to one that is truly incarnate in the world. Mental jamming of the type described occurs in the relationship. The intrapsychically and interpersonally are interlinked: the unsticking of one unsticks the other also. Each time an inner obstacle is removed there comes about an emotional deepening. These inner obstacles are like vicious personalities attacking the process of integration. They are part of the structure of narcissism.
