ABSTRACT

The religion of Socrates differs from that of the Buddha and Jesus in that it resulted from a process of reasoning. In a manner similar to the Buddha and Jesus, Socrates challenged the primitive religion in Greece at the time. He preached a morality as elevated as that of the Buddha and Jesus, teaching how people should live and outlining the principles on which his morality was based. Socrates was one of the great religious teachers of the Axial Era, although he is not usually recognized as such because he did not found a religious dynasty, or at least he is the only such teacher who remains well known to posterity. The epitomy of his spiritual teaching is contained in the Gorgias. The dialogue consists of three arguments which Socrates has with the three Sophists: Gorgias, Polus and Callicles.
