David never realized his wish to leave analysis. The traumatic event that occurred that same week changed his mind. I shall describe it in detail:
At nine o’clock in the evening I received a phone call from David saying that he was cancelling his sessions for all of next week. In answer to my enquiry about what happened, he replied in a tone devoid of emotion, “My son committed suicide.” “What?” I said, shocked and horrified. “I was afraid this would happen”, he answered. “I am not surprised; I will come to my session next week after the shiva is over.”
